Finding a skin care routine that helps me maintain clear skin has been a bit of a process. I’ve experienced pretty much everything over the years, often as a result of doing all the wrong things. Oily skin, blackheads, acne, dry skin, sensitive skin; I have had them all.
To give you some background, I never had major issues with my skin growing up, although I did use products like Clearasil that stripped my skin of its moisture and actually lead to oilier skin. Then I copped a pretty nasty case of adult acne a few years back (due to some hormonal imbalances). The acne got to the stage where it was severely affecting my mental health, so I saw a dermatologist and made the decision to go on Roaccutane (which is a strong medication that does have side effects, but for me at that time, it was a matter of weighing up the pros and cons). My acne did clear, and since then I only really get major breakouts when I’ve been stressed or eating too much sugar.
Tips for acne free clear skin
These days, I’ve been learning how to take proper care of my skin. These are the things that have been working for me:
- Cleanse and moisturise every morning and every night without fail.
- Stick to a mixture of simple, natural products and some more active, specialist products formulated to provide specific nutrients.
- I get skin treatments when I can. Recently, I’ve been getting extractions and lactic acid peels done at Clinica-Lase. They have no down-time and make my skin really soft and dewy.
- Wear SPF on your face every day. I get my required sun exposure on my body.
- Try not to pick at your face or touch it too much.
- Change your pillow case a minimum of once a week as bacteria can build up on it.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Try to get at least 7 to 8 hours sleep each night. Eat well most of the time. Yep, the boring stuff, but it really makes a difference.
Everyone’s skin is different and there is so much generic information out there in magazines and on the internet. A lot of it is either incorrect or not relevant to your unique skin situation. If you’re struggling with your skin, I found it really useful to speak to a skin specialist to get some advice. Then it’s just a matter of trying a few things to see what works for you.
