It has been a while since I’ve done a structured Muay Thai class. I have been training myself at odd times to fit in with my schedule, but I do miss the atmosphere of training in a group. So this week, I went along to one of the evening Muay Thai classes at Elev8 MMA in Heidelberg West, Melbourne.
The class is run by Jared “Jarhead” Sabelberg. I had trained with him in the past at another gym and really enjoyed his style of teaching. The class runs for 90 minutes and is open to all levels. I think the last time I trained solidly for 90 minutes was back in May in the lead up to my last fight. I felt the effects of this around the 60-minute mark, so I know I need to step things up again.
Muay Thai class format
We started with two rounds of skipping, with push ups and sit ups in between. This was followed by a few rounds of shadow work with blocks of 30 seconds of burpees thrown into the mix. Then we did 30 kicks each leg on the bags. By this stage, I was well and truly warm.
Next we moved onto pad work with a partner. Kicks were the main focus on the pads, which I love. We worked through a number of combinations, using punches to set up the kicks. We added in some knees as well and finished each section with another 30 continuous kicks.
The class finished with 300 knees on the bag, which we split into three sets of 100. Then sit ups with a partner whacking your abs with a pad. To top it all off, we did a 2-minute plank. As you would expect, I was drenched in sweat by the end. I have previously written about ways to increase your fitness, and I would add this class to the list.
Later this week, I will be trying out one of the gym’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. I have never done BJJ before, but I am curious to see what it’s all about. I will let you know how I go.
